Why in the world do you get Bridal showers and Baby showers but never a College shower? If the purpose of showers is to provide the person/people with all the items they will need to live and function in a new life with a new person, then college fits into that category. It has taken me this long to build up our kitchen stores enough to make cookies. Every week I would buy a new thing or two like vanilla or baking soda. Now, in my case most of this was food, but the same principle applies. We don't have any spices because this is a new way of living for all of us. My mother has had 25+ years, so she owns all kinds of those once a year spices (like things to make pumpkin pie) and more than one cookie sheet and cooling racks and a mixer that doesn't give up at the slightest sign of work!
The other thing is that, when you put 6 people together, you end up with a semi-well put together kitchen. We have enough tupperware to cover food for a year, but again, we have no cooling racks. I tried to get everyone to plan better. We emailed back and forth, and we still ended up with a bunch of useless stuff and no good mixer. We have moldy food in the fridge because nobody remembers that they need to throw out food if they aren't going to eat it. But I still don't have the cloves that I need to make pumpkin cookies and other fall treats.

im sorry laura. that sounds difficult and unpleasant!
ReplyDeleteCloves are overrated. We'll go shopping this weekend and get you sorted out. No worries.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any money ashley, hence the week by week thing
ReplyDeleteLaura, tell your mom to go to Penzey's Spices on line and send you an assortment of spices. I did this for Natalie when she moved away - small containers of the stuff you need most!!!
ReplyDeletePS: http://www.penzeys.com/
ReplyDeleteFor that matter, since you can buy very small containers for much cheaper (and better quality) than what is in the store, you might be able to afford some of these yourself. Don't look at the pre-packaged assortments, build your own.
BTW - I agree with you about the shower idea. Besides the spices, the other gift I bought my fledglings was their own tool kits. Everyone needs a hammer, screwdriver, wrench, etc.
Someone from the ward (the Maneys and family, I don't know if you know them)sent me a pink tool kit and it is very handy. I am totally going to raid Penzeys.
